The three organizations you meet in 2025
Remember 2020? The year the world woke up to systemic racism and suddenly everyone was talking about DEI. But as the dust settled, it became clear that not all companies were approaching DEI with the same level of commitment. In fact, they fell into three distinct categories:
1. The Sightseers hopped on the DEI bandwagon because it was the trendy thing to do. They grabbed a quick selfie with a "diversity" initiative and called it a day. They weren't truly invested in the journey, just the photo op.
2. The Wanderers were a bit more engaged, but they lacked a clear direction. They wandered aimlessly, dabbling in various DEI initiatives without a real plan or purpose. They made some progress, but often got lost or sidetracked along the way.
3. The Journeyers truly understood that DEI is a lifelong expedition. They were committed to the journey, prepared for the challenges, and dedicated to creating real, lasting change. They had a map, a compass, and the determination to reach their destination.
Fast forward to 2024... Affirmative action is overturned, DEI is politicized, and the landscape is more challenging than ever. How did our three groups fare?
The Sightseers bailed as soon as things got tough, and they abandoned the journey altogether.
The Wanderers lost their way without a clear path, stumbling, faltering, and making little progress.
The Journeyers persevered by adapting to the changing terrain, navigating the obstacles, and continuing to move forward.
So, where do we go from here?
If you're serious about DEI, it's time to ask yourself: What kind of traveler are you?
If you're a Sightseer, it's time to step off the sidelines and commit to the journey.
If you're a Wanderer, it's time to find your direction and chart a course for real change.
If you're a Journeyer, keep going! Your leadership is needed now more than ever.
The DEI journey is never easy, but it's essential, regardless of the type of traveler you or your organization may be.
